Since coming up through the ranks within the organization, Alex Caruso went from competing for minutes in the G League to closing out games alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Caruso’s defensive intensity and chemistry with James on offense shined throughout his time with L.A., but as the free agency period in the summer approaches, the Lakers have a decision to make.
Caruso’s two-year, $5.5 million contract he signed in the 2019-20 season is expiring, and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent when the market opens on Aug. 2.
The 27-year-old guard played a vital role off the bench as someone who could challenge the opponent’s best guard on and off the ball. He always knew how to navigate through screens, made timely jumps to intercept passes and never shied away from the moment.
Offensively, he’s supplied a steady perimeter presence, albeit on low volume. He shot 40.1 percent from deep this season on 2.4 attempts, primarily on catch-and-shoot opportunities.
He’s been a seamless fit despite the flaws in his game when it comes to playmaking for himself and teammates and creating his own shot.
As the guard joins free agency, he explained his thought process behind potentially returning to the Lakers during exit interviews, via Lakers Nation:

Caruso still has plenty of time to mull over where he wants to go next, but he’s carved out a strong role for himself wherever he lands.
But he’s also been vocal about enjoying his minutes playing with James and Davis, which could be a factor in his decision.
