Alex Beresford says he's received relentless racist abuse since spat with Piers Morgan

Alex Beresford has revealed that he has been subjected to racist abuse in the aftermath of his fallout with Piers Morgan three weeks ago.

The weatherman and the presenter came to blows on Good Morning Britain over their differing views on the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The spat led to Piers, 55, sensationally storming off set.

The Life Stories presenter's original comments about the interview led to a record number of Ofcom complaints from viewers and he has since stepped down from his position on the breakfast show after nearly six years.

And now, writing in The Telegraph, Alex, 40, has revealed he has been "subjected to relentless racism" on social media.

The abuse has become too much and he has now admitted it has forced him to quit the platforms.

He wrote: "I haven’t announced it (like the former Arsenal player Thierry Henry did this week when he publicly quit social media, in response to anonymous racist bullying) but I have been forced to step away from Twitter and Facebook myself, because it was getting too much.

"I am a strong person, but I am not made of steel."

It comes only days after French footballer Thierry Henry hit out at social media companies for not doing enough to protect people from online abuse.

Alex said the latest abuse is just the last few weeks of his "very much lived experience of racism in Britain".

He went on to criticise the latest Commission created by Boris Johnson saying it gives a "false sense of hope" that the nation's work tackling racism is "done".

He said it also gives racist social media users the "comfort to push a little bit further."

He added: "The harsh reality, though, is that social media is just a reflection of a bigger problem in society.

"These people are your co-workers, they are even a parent at the school gate."

He also admitted that he thinks that discussing racism is one of the most uncomfortable conversations to be had with some people trying to be too careful when it comes to broaching the subject.
