Alex Beresford 'didn't want' Piers Morgan to quit GMB as he breaks silence

Alex Beresford has broken his silence on Piers Morgan's exit from Good Morning Britain.

The ITV show's weather presenter got into a heated, on-screen debate with the presenter and journalist on Tuesday's show - hours before Piers' exit was announced.

The 55-year-old stormed off the GMB set when Alex labelled his comments about Meghan Markle as 'diabolical'.

Ofcom has also launched an investigation into the presenter's comments that he didn't believe that the Duchess of Sussex had suicidal thoughts.

Alex has now said that the outcome wasn't what he was "hoping for".

"There is so much that could be said. Piers’ departure sincerely wasn’t the conclusion I was hoping for," he wrote on Twitter.

"Over the last few years, Piers and I have had a lively, cheeky on-air relationship.

"We both wanted to be on the show Tuesday, and from our very public conversations on Twitter, we both knew how strongly our opinions differed on the treatment of Harry and Meghan pre and post the interview that has split the world.

"I hoped we could reach a place of understanding. It's sad that we weren't able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage.

"On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree."

Alex added: "I didn’t want him to quit, but I did want him to listen.

"Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He's given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful.

"I wish him well."

When asked outside his home on Wednesday morning, less then a day after his exit was announced, what he would say to his Good Morning Britain colleague, Alex, he said: "Good luck to him."

Many GMB viewers hailed Alex for his actions on Tuesday's show and have tipped him to become Piers' replacement on the news programme.
