Alex Beresford breaks silence on Piers Morgan's GMB exit after Harry and Meghan row

Good Morning Britain weatherman Alex Beresford has released a statement about Piers Morgan's departure from the breakfast show.

Bristol-born Alex got into a heated debate with the 55-year-old ITV presenter when they discussed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Piers walked off the set and subsequently left his role as co-host of the show after thousands of Ofcom complaints about his comments.

Today (March 11), Alex broke his silence on the matter, saying he "didn't want him to quit, but did want him to listen"

Alex's statement reads: "There is so much that could be said. Piers' departure sincerely wasn't the conclusion I was hoping for.

"Over the last few years, Piers and I have had a lively, cheeky on-air relationship. We both wanted to be on the show Tuesday morning, and from our very public conversations on Twitter, we both knew how strongly our opinions differed on the treatment of Harry and Meghan pre and post the interview that has split the world.

"I hoped we could reach a place of understanding. It's sad that we weren't able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree.

"I didn't want him to quit, but I did want him to listen. Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He's given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful. I wish him well!"

During Meghan and Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan claimed an unnamed member of the Royal Family raised “concerns and conversations about how dark Archie's skin might be when he's born ".

After the programme aired in the UK, Piers said he "didn't believe a word" Meghan said. Concerns were raised about this reaction, especially given Meghan's opening up about her mental health.

Following the bust up, Piers wished Alex "good luck" when speaking to journalists outside his London home yesterday.

He said: "Good luck to him."
