Alesha's depraved killer Aaron Campbell lodges appeal against prison sentence

Alesha MacPhail's depraved killer Aaron Campbell has lodged an appeal against his prison sentence.

Campbell, 16, was last month convicted of abducting, raping and murdering Airdrie schoolgirl Alesha, 6, while she visited family on the Isle of Bute last July.

He denied the charge during a two-week trial but admitted the offences shortly before his sentencing.

He told a psychologist he had to "stop himself from laughing" at times during the trial.

Judge Lord Matthews gave him a mandatory life sentence and said he will spend at least 27 years behind bars.

A spokesman from the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service told STV News: "Aaron Campbell has lodged a note of appeal against his sentence."

"Cold-bloodied" Campbell took Alesha from her bed on July 2 when he entered her father Robert's home in search of cannabis.

He saw it as a "moment of opportunity" and carried her to the site of a former hotel on Bute, telling her he was a friend of Robert's and was taking her home.

He committed the horrendous crimes and ditched his clothes in the sea before going back to the scene shortly afterwards to retrieve his phone.

Alesha's body was found shortly after the alarm was raised by her family.

During the sentencing, Lord Matthews told how he was "shocked" when he read the "cold-blooded and horrific" account given by the killer to a psychologist after his conviction.

Alesha's body was found in a wooded area of the island a few hours after her family reported her missing on July 2 last year.

Campbell was sentenced as a child and initially could not be named because he is under 18. The judge lifted that restriction after a challenge by media outlets, including our sister paper the Daily Record.
