Alesha MacPhail's mum will 'stand there and laugh' if killer's appeal backfires

The twisted child killer Aaron Campbell who abducted, raped and murdered six-year-old Alesha MacPhail has launched an appeal against his 27-year minimum sentence.

Alesha's mother, Georgina Lochrane, said she hoped the appeal would backfire and end up with him having even longer sentence.

The 16-year-old killer's application came on the same day as Alesha's uncle launched a petition to call on the Scottish government stop protecting the teen from harsh punishment.

The campaign has gathered over 15,000 signatures.

Alesha MacPhail's killer Aaron Campbell appeals against life sentence for murder

Georgina told Daily Record : "I'm not surprised at all. We were fully prepared for him to appeal his conviction and sentence before he admitted it but now he can only appeal the sentence.

"His appeal needs to be accepted before it can go through court and if it does, it can end up with him having even more added on to his sentence.

"He’s 17 next month. If he turns 18 by the time his appeal comes to court, there is nothing stopping them treating him as an adult and putting lots more on his sentence.

"I'll just stand there and laugh when it blows up in his face. I don't think he will get less."

The teenager snatched the girl from her bed at her grandparent's home on the Isle of Bute, Scotland, last summer.

Aaron Campbell's doctor says kids should be screened for psychopathic traits

He brutally attacked Alesha, causing 'catastrophic' injuries before dumping her naked body in woodland.

Georgina said she believed the judge tried to give Campbell the toughest sentence possible.

She said: "The judge did everything he possible could and if I got a chance to thank Lord Matthews, I would."

Alesha's uncle, Calum MacPhail, has called for changed to the law so children accused of the most serious crimes like rape and murder, can be tried and sentenced as adults in court.

His petition has reached its 15,000 target, same day as Campbell's appeal bid was confirmed.

The Scottish government has reportedly expressed sympathy for Alesha's family, however said of the petition: "Sentencing within the overall legal framework is a matter for the judiciary, which is independent of ministers."
