Alert to motorists over dangers of in-car germs

MOTORISTS are being reminded that everyday items left in hot cars during the summer are the perfect breeding ground for dangerous germs.

Leasing Options carried out scientific swab tests on bits and bobs that were left in a car cabin with an inside temperature of 33C.

Shocked by the results, the major automotive outfit is giving tips on how to avoid getting a nasty bug during your travels.

The firm’s test found sunglasses contaminated with fungi can cause infection and a wet dog toy with bacteria resistant to common antibiotics.

Toxic mould that can causing breathing difficulties was also found growing on carrier bags and takeaway rubbish had developed harmful bacteria.

So Leasing Options has come up with a number of ways to keep your car clean and you safe from harm.

First up, have a clear-out by disposing of your rubbish – recycling as much as possible – and tidy away anything you want to keep.

Remove your floor mats and clean them with hot soapy water before allowing them to dry and vacuum any crumbs or dirt from the floor and on the seats.

Wipe the windows with cleaning solution and a microfibre cloth, and clean the dashboard and steering wheel thoroughly with antibacterial wipes.

Check your door pockets for forgotten items and wipe away any grime, then clean the handles, seat belts and window switches with antibacterial wipes.

Also, wipe down anything you might like to keep in the car, such as a child’s toy. And, finally, keep a handy hygiene kit with antibacterial wipes and hand gel in the glovebox.
