Aleksander Mitrovic admits Scotland pain 'burns inside' after penalty miss that sparked national celebrations

Serbia star Aleksander Mitrovic has opened up on the pain that 'burns inside' after the spot-kick miss that sent Scotland to Euro 2020.

The Fulham striker saw his penalty saved by David Marshall to spark huge celebrations across the nation.

He spearheaded a rampant display last night as the men from the Balkans smashed Russia 5-0 in their final Nations League qualifier.

But Mitrovic admitted he's still devastated at his inability to hit the net when it counted.

He said: "The defeat to Scotland still burns inside me. It hurts and that feeling will never go away.

"The players, coaching staff and everyone at our FA worked so hard to get us to the Euros. We did not succeed.

"But we will never give up for Serbia.

"Nothing went our way against the Scots. But no one can say we didn't try our best. In football, you need a little luck and we had none that night. We had a bad day.

"It went to penalties. I had the misfortune to miss and the hurt will always be there.

"We got praised after we went to Norway and won and received criticism after losing to Scotland. I accept that.

"I don't think you can compare the win against Russia and the defeat to Scotland. They were two different types of games.

"But to score five goals against Russia - a very big, serious national team - is an excellent result and it was an honour to captain my country too."
