Alejandro Garnacho: Chelsea confirm £40m forward signing as injury worries grow

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho in a £40million deal.

The move was not a well-kept secret as the 21-year-old Argentine was spotted in a private box at today’s 2-0 win over Fulham.

He has signed a seven-year deal, and his shirt number is yet to be revealed.

He is a timely addition, as Chelsea striker Liam Delap pulled up with a severe hamstring injury in the first half on Saturday. With his absence compounded by an injury to Cole Palmer and uncertainty surrounding Nicolas Jackson’s future, Enzo Maresca will be grateful for the extra depth.

On signing, Garnacho said: “It’s an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club.

“I can’t wait to get started. I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world!

“It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy.”

He has 16 goals in 93 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, where he played academy football after leaving Atletico Madrid in 2020.

One of those 16 league goals is particularly memorable. He won the Puskas Award in 2024 for an acrobatic bicycle kick scored against Everton.

Garnacho has been at the centre of transfer speculation for much of the summer after he was transfer-listed by Ruben Amorim at the end of last season.

He was dropped for the Europa League final, which United lost 1-0 to Tottenham, and hinted that he would like to leave the club as he spoke post-match. He will now ply his trade for Chelsea, but will be made to wait until after the international break to make his debut.
