Aled Jones once gave Princess Diana a 'surreal' private performance of Beatles songs at Kensington Palace

Aled Jones has revealed how he once had the 'surreal' experience of singing Beatles songs at the request of Princess Diana at a private performance at Kensington Palace.

The Walking in the Air singer, who was 'about 13 or 14' at the time, recalled the 'hilarious' moment Prince Charles called his dad at work and invited him to sing for him and Diana at their royal residence.

He said the performance turned into a karaoke session at the end, with Diana requesting Beatles songs from the young star. The heir to the throne, meanwhile, asked him to sing classical composer Handel instead.

Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast, Jones, 50, said: "The Prince Charles one was just hilarious because he rang my dad at work.

"He said 'I love your son's voice, I'd love him to come down to Kensington Palace to sing for myself and Diana when's he free' and my dad went um... tomorrow if you like?

"A couple of days later my mum, my pianist from wales and myself found ourselves sitting in Kensington Palace in the living room looking at photos of William and Harry as little babies and then in came Charles and he gave my mum a gin and tonic and then Diana came in, she'd been swimming, and then I sang for an hour and then we talked for an hour.

"My dad didn't come down because he had work. I remember Charles asking my mum 'why is your husband not here?' and she said 'oh he's got work' like it was a normal thing. He's got work, he's got stuff to do.

"That was the time I was most nervous because we were just going to get a black cab there, keeping it real, and a friend of ours in London who was a big business man said no I'm going to take you there in style and he had a Rolls Royce.

"I couldn't open the door because I was so nervous because it was just so surreal, you know I'm used to dealing with concert halls and thousands of people but this was just two people so it was really exposing but they were lovely.

"At the end we did 'what would you like to hear?' so for Diana I sang some Beatles songs and for Charles I did some Handel... it was just like Welsh karaoke, it was great."
