Alec Cleland appointed caretaker manager of St Johnstone

Alec Cleland has been appointed caretaker manager of St Johnstone’s following Tommy Wright’s departure.

Cleland joined the club back in 2011, initially as a youth-team coach before being promoted to the role of first-team coach.

In June 2018, following Callum Davidson’s departure to Stoke, he was promoted to assistant manager and has played a key role in Saints’ success.

A Saints spokesperson confirmed: “Following this morning’s announcement regarding Tommy Wright’s departure from St Johnstone Football Club, the board would like to update supporters on the situation moving forward.

“Alec Cleland will assume first-team responsibilities as caretaker manager until further notice.

“This is a role which Alec has taken on before and the board are delighted that he has taken charge in the interim.

“The club will begin its search for a new first-team-manager once the COVID-19 situation in respect of football is clarified, as mentioned in the previous statement.

“We will continue to keep supporters updated as and when more information becomes available.”
