Alec Baldwin reaches settlement with family of Halyna Hutchins after she was killed on set

Alec Baldwin has reached a settlement with the family of Halyna Hutchins, who was killed on the set of Rust in a terrifying incident in 2021.

The cinematographer was shot with a prop gun the US actor was using in October last year on the New Mexico film set. The film's director Joel Souza was also injured in the incident.

The parties have now reached an undisclosed settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit filed in February against the actor and other defendants, according to a statement released by Baldwin's attorney.

The suit alleged numerous industry safety violations.

Baldwin is also among up to four people who may still face criminal charges later this month for the fatal shooting, Santa Fe District Attorney District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said last month.

Rust will continue filming in January, with Halyna's widower Matthew Hutchins working as executive producer. He will receive a portion of the film's profits, Baldwin's lawyer added.

In a statement Matthew said: "We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC.

"As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed. The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023.

"I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin).

"All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work."

A statement from Baldwin's attorney, Luke Nikas, read: "We are pleased to announce today the settlement of the civil case filed on behalf of the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

"Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son.

"We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation."

Rust Movie Productions, LLC, attorney Spadone of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, added: "We are pleased the parties came together to resolve this matter, which, subject to court approval, marks an important step forward in celebrating Halyna's life and honouring her work."
