Alec Baldwin breaks silence after shooting dead cinematographer Halyna Hitchins on Rust film set

Alec Baldwin has spoken for the first time since a film crew member was shot dead on the set of a movie.

Halyna Hitchins, a cinematographer, died after the actor discharged a gun on the set of a film, Rust, that he did not realise contained a live round.

Earlier this week, US police said criminal charges may still be filed and that there was 'some complacency' around safety on the set.

District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said of any potential charges that 'all options are on the table'.

"No one has been ruled out at this point," she said.

Today, speaking from a roadside in Ontario, Canada, the actor has spoken publicly for the first time.

“There are incidental accidents on film sets from time-to-time, but nothing like this. This is a one-in-a-trillion episode, a one-in-a-trillion event," he said.

The actor's wife was by his side filming as he spoke, captured on video and tweeted by @therecount.

“A woman died. She was my friend, she was my friend,” he added.

“The day I arrived in Sante Fe to start shooting, I took her to dinner. We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together when this horrible event happened."

He said he was 'in constant contact' with Ms Hutchins' widow who was 'overwhelmed with grief', and said that he 'talked to the cops every day' but there was an active investigation ongoing.

He also asked the media to stop following him as his 'kids were crying in the car'.
