Aldi 'wins the internet' after 'clever' dig at John Lewis' new Christmas advert

As Christmas approached, the battle of adverts is starting to commence.

And Aldi shoppers have been been praising the German supermarket's response to John Lewis and Partners' 2021 Christmas advert.

The budget supermarket has made a name for itself with their quick-witted social media posts with the social media team often being commended.

Now as John Lewis released their anticipated advert yesterday, Aldi couldn't resist but to get involved, Liverpool Echo reports.

The John Lewis advert, titled ‘Unexpected Guest’, shows space traveller Skye crash-landing at the height of festivities in the woods near the home of 14-year-old Nathan, who introduces her to the traditions of eating mince pies, decorating the tree and, to her slight confusion, wearing novelty jumpers.

Aldi has now taken to its Facebook and Twitter pages to get in on the hype, offering their latest Specialbuy for an unexpected guest.

Alongside a photo of a Tritech Airbed, they added the tongue-in-cheek caption: “John Lewis & Partners we've got you covered x #UnexpectedGuest”.

Fans of the store were quick to spot the joke, with the post racking up more than 7,000 likes and 4,600 comments.

Shoppers praised the move as “very clever” and “absolutely brilliant” - and one person even said they were “crying laughing” at it.

Beneath the post, one person wrote: “Brilliant! Aldi always raises the bar that little bit higher.

A second said: “Love it - very clever well done Aldi UK” and a third added: “Absolutely brilliant marketing team take a bow!”

A fourth shopper wrote: “Aldi wins the Internet”.

At the time of writing, Aldi have yet to reveal their Christmas advert but have already confirmed that the beloved Kevin the Carrot will not be returning.

Aldi often has a tongue-in-cheek approach to their adverts with a nod to John Lewis' style of feature.
