Aldi warns shoppers of delays to Specialbuys products 'due to Suez Canal crisis'

Aldi has confirmed that the delivery of a number of Specialbuys items has been delayed after the blockage of the Suez Canal.

The cut-price supermarket had been scheduled to release a number of cycling-related items - including a mountain bike and bicycle lock - this month.

But their release has been delayed until mid-May. Aldi has attributed the delay to ‘current events’ in a notice on its website.

Grocery news website The Grocer is reporting that the crisis on the Suez Canal in late March has contributed to the disruption.

A notice on the Aldi website reads: “A number of Specialbuys may be delayed due to current events. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The container vessel Ever Given found itself wedged in the famous waterway - resulting in six days of chaos for global deliveries.

It is believed that more than 350 ships were caught up in the blockage of the Suez, where around 12% of the world’s trade passes through.

Around £7billion worth of goods are said to have been held up on a daily basis during the crisis.

The 400-metre vessel, which is as long as the Empire State Building is tall, was eventually freed on March 29.
