Aldi ups London pay again to £13.55 an hour

Aldi is to pay all its London store and warehouse workers at least £13.55 an hour, after a second pay rise in a little over six months.

The new pay will take effect from 1 February.

The  discount supermarket upped its basic pay outside of London to £12 an hour, but inside the M25, the total will be £13.55. That brings Aldi in line with the Living Wage Foundation’s National Living Wage, and makes it the country’s highest-paying supermarket.

For an employee working 2,000 hours a year, that would lead to an annual salary of £27,100.

Depending on service, pay could be as high as £13.85 inside the M25.

Aldi also noted that unlike some of its rivals, it pays for break. It says that this is worth an additional £900 a year for its staff.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Just as we promise to provide the best value to our customers, we are also committed to being the highest-paying supermarket in the sector.

“We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi and this is a way of thanking them for all their hard work over the past year. We believe our colleagues are the best in the sector and they play a huge part in making Aldi what it is today.”

According to market research firm Kantar, Aldi is the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket with a 9.6% market share in the three months to 26 November. That’s up from 9.3% a year earlier as shoppers turn to discount chains amid fast-rising prices..

Aldi opened its 1,000th UK store earlier this year in Woking, and said it plans to open 500 more.
