Aldi unveils new 'traffic light' rule for queuing outside stores amid coronavirus pandemic

Aldi has unveiled a new "traffic light" rule when it comes to queuing outside its stores - and it might take some getting used to.

The supermarket giant is rolling out automated traffic light system at entrances in all shops nationwide this week after a trial in ten UK stores.

Following the outbreak, store marshals have been placed outside almost all supermarkets to control the number of customers in stores at any one time.

These measures aim to prevent the spread of coronavirus, much like Aldi's new technology which will control the number of customers going in and out of stores.

Under the new system, traffic lights will signal green when customers can enter stores and make sure they are limited by the two-metre social distancing rules.

Though, NHS and blue light worker priority access remains in place across Aldi's stores and they will still be encouraged to head to the front of the queue.

As well as a traffic light system, Aldi has other measures in place including: protective screens at checkouts, distancing markers on shop floors, sanitisation stations for customers and signage on how to shop safely.

Communications director Richard Thornton, said: “The protection and safety of our customers and employees is our top priority and this new system is an accurate and effective way to allow us to control customer numbers in stores.

“The system’s trial was well received by our customers and we will be gradually rolling this new social distancing measure out nationwide from this week.”
