Aldi to open stores in 30 new locations including Scotland - see if your area is on list

Aldi have announced they will be opening new stores in three Scottish locations as part of a multi-billion pound expansion.

The expansion plans will see the discount supermarket open 100 new stores in 30 locations across Scotland and the rest of the UK, which will create thousands more job opportunities for the local areas.

The popular supermarket will invest £1.3 billion by 2023 in a bid to further grow its retail estate, as it continues to push ahead with plans to open an average of one new store a week, Hull Live reports.

In an updated list of the planned expansions where sites are expected to open, it looks like Aldi are planning to open stores in smaller areas such as Cathcart, Dumbarton and Peebles.

There are currently 96 Aldi stores across the whole of Scotland and the German grocer can be found in larger cities such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen.

The supermarket revealed that for their expansion they are looking for town-centre or edge-of-centre areas that were suitable for new developments.

The new developments must be suitable for a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces, as well as being on a prominent main road with good visibility and access.

Additionally, Aldi UK said it will also be investing in the development of new and expanded distribution centres.

Its communications director, Richard Thornton, said: "We’re continuing to gain even more customers - with over 60 per cent of UK households shopping with Aldi in the last year.

“Our focus is on expanding our store estate, making sure Aldi is accessible to as many of these new shoppers across the country as possible. Looking ahead, we are excited to provide millions of new customers with access to Aldi’s award-winning quality and unbeatable value as we create even more places and more ways to shop with us.”

Some of the areas it is targeting include:

  • South East – Bicester, Guildford, Milton Keynes,
  • South West – Cheltenham, Penzance and Plymouth
  • West Midlands – Birmingham, Black Country and Coventry
  • East Midlands – Alvaston, Northampton and Wellingborough
  • East of England – Basildon, Brentwood and Hitchin
  • North West – Runcorn, Stockport and Macclesfield
  • North East – Stockton, South Shields and Malton
  • Yorkshire – South Bradford, Meadowhall and York
  • Scotland – Cathcart, Dumbarton and Peebles
  • Wales – Aberdare, Barry and Lampeter
