Aldi to open new store in Irish town with quirky new design twist

Aldi is continuing its Irish expansion with plans to open yet another new store – this one in Co Mayo.

The German giant will create up to 30 new permanent jobs as it sets up its fifth shop in Mayo.

An application for planning permission will soon be sent by Aldi to Mayo County Council, after the supermarket chain purchased a nine-acre site for the new store in Ballyhaunis.

And on top of the 30 staff Aldi will employ once the store is built, up to 50 new people will be hired during the construction of the shop.

The shop will be laid out with Aldi's Project Fresh design – a feature introduced to widespread acclaim in recent times.

It'll be powered by 100% green electricity and is set to boast solar panels on the roof – which the supermarket says shows its commitment to sustainability.

The shop will include a 101-space car park as well as 10 bike parking spaces.

Colin Breslin, the regional managing director of Aldi Ireland, said: "We can’t wait to come to Ballyhaunis and bring our amazing prices to even more customers across County Mayo.

"Our dedicated customers know that we won’t be beaten on price, and we are committed to providing the best value possible to shoppers. Our Swap & Save campaign reminds shoppers about the saving that can be generated by swapping their weekly shop to Aldi."

On top of the Ballyhaunis shop, Aldi has plans to add a premises in Ballina to its existing locations in Castlebar, Claremorris and Ballinrobe.

With 145 shops around the country, it employs around 4,500 people across the country and shows no sign of slowing down, with a series of store openings either recently completed or else firmly in the pipeline.
