Aldi to open a further 100 stores across the UK in a £1.3bn expansion

Supermarket chain Aldi is to open a further 100 stores over the next two years across the UK.

It has pledged to investing £1.3bn by 2023 in a bid to further grow its retail estate.

While not specifying how many of the new stores will be in Wales, it is currently assessing sites across Wales, including in Aberdare, Barry and Lampeter.

Aldi, which has more than 920 stores in the UK, is seeking freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for property development. The new stores will extend to 20,000 sq ft.

It is also investing in new and expanded distribution centre capacity.

The supermarket chain currently has 57 stores in Wales, employing 1,527 staff. It employs 657 at its distribution centre in Cardiff.

Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi UK, said: “We’re continuing to gain even more customers - with over 60% of UK households shopping with Aldi in the last year.

“Our focus is on expanding our store estate, making sure Aldi is accessible to as many of these new shoppers across the country as possible."
