Aldi to give 35,000 workers a 10% Christmas bonus as "thank you" for work over lockdown

Aldi workers will get a 10% bonus next month in recognition of their hard work throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The German grocer said all store and distribution workers will receive a bonus next month ahead of December 25.

It said around 35,000 colleagues will qualify for the incentive, which comes amid calls to extend Sunday trading hours over the festive rush.

Giles Hurley, Aldi chief executive, said: "This year has been a difficult one for so many and our colleagues have worked tirelessly to ensure the nation continues have access to high quality affordable food.

"This bonus is a gesture of our appreciation for our amazing Aldi colleagues who have shown incredible resilience and dedication throughout 2020."

This week, the supermarket also revealed it's rolling out its new "click and collect" service to 200 more stores next month.

Click and collect was first tried out in the Midlands in September, and following success there, it's now being massively expanded.

"We know that more and more people want to buy high-quality food at unbeatable Aldi prices – particularly at the moment – and this trial has been hugely popular so far," Hurley said.

"By extending it to hundreds of new stores, we’re making Aldi accessible to thousands of shoppers who might never have visited one of our stores before."

Shoppers can choose from a full range of grocery items online, which will be picked and packed in store by Aldi staff.

You can find out where your nearest participating Aldi is at groceries.aldi.co.uk  to book a time slot for collection in selected stores.

Aldi is also trialling a rapid delivery service across several stores in the East Midlands, London, Cambridge and Greater Manchester in partnership with Deliveroo.

The Deliveroo service allows customers to order from a range of 300 Aldi products and have them delivered to their doorstep in 30 minutes.
