Aldi to donate spare food to groups across Ayrshire

Supermarket chain Aldi is to offer food donations from two of its Ayrshire stores.

Charities, community groups and food banks across the region are being urged to register to receive regular surplus groceries in the scheme.

As part of its link-up with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to food banks and charities, over 900 of Aldi’s UK stores donate surplus food to good causes all year round.

However, the two stores in Irvine and Stewarton are now able to support even more organisations in the local area.

Organisations paired with the stores can collect fresh and ambient food products that are near the end of their shelf life – including fruit, vegetables and bread.

Mary Dunn, managing director of corporate responsibility at Aldi UK, said: “Our food donation scheme plays a vital role in ensuring that fresh and healthy food is accessible to those in need all year round, while also allowing us to redistribute surplus stock that would otherwise go to waste.

“We’re committed to doing everything we can to donate more meals in 2021 than ever before and look forward to welcoming even more local groups that can benefit from receiving our regular donations.”

Steve Butterworth, Neighbourly CEO, added: “Finding more good causes and food banks in Ayrshire is critical to ensure surplus food finds its way easily and quickly to the communities that need it most.

"I’d encourage any local organisations who could benefit from this to get in touch with us today.”

Aldi has committed to donate 10 million meals across the country in 2021, with more than three million meals donated already this year.

Local groups in Ayrshire who are interested should email aldi@neighbourly.com or call 0117 422 0870 to apply.
