Aldi to bring Cuthbert the Caterpillar to Irish stores despite UK drama

Aldi has confirmed it is bringing their Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake to Irish shelves next month.

The chocolate celebration cake has caused a bit of an issue in the UK, with Marks and Spencers' less than happy with Aldi as they saw it as a rip-off of Colin the Caterpillar.

M&S confirmed it was suing Aldi over claims its caterpillar cake is almost identical to Colin. The chain wants to remove Cuthbert from shelves indefinitely - but it is not taking legal action against other rival supermarket versions.

M&S claims the Cuthbert cake infringes its trademark and "rides on the coat-tails" of its reputation.

But Aldi Ireland has said it is going to stand with their UK brethren - by bringing Cuthbert over here and raising money for the Irish Cancer Society in the process.

The retailer tweeted last night:

"Now that Cuthbert is a proper A-list celeb, we’re bringing him over to Aldi Ireland shelves next month and want to donate all profits to the Irish Cancer Society. We’re standing with Aldi UK in raising money for charity, not lawyers #CaterpillarsforCancer"

Customers were quick to praise the supermarket.

One replied: "Everytime I walk through those glorious Aldi doors I will loudly protest FREE CUTHBERT!"

While a second added: "From the chrysalis of conflict to the caterpillar of charitable causes. Great stuff, Aldi (and Cuthbert)!"

Others suggested a name change, with one user saying: "Great stuff Aldi, we likey your styleeee!! Now if you could just change his name to suit the local environs you’d be the tops ....Ciaran, Conor, Cathal, Cormac, Cian, Cillian"

Other suggestions included Caoimhe and Cú Chullain, which would be an interesting choice of name for a celebratory cake.

Most importantly, the Irish Cancer Society said that they were delighted to be involved.
