Aldi ties with premium brand for best quality BBQ pork sausages

With the sun beginning to make an appearance, quite a few of us will be wanting to fire up the BBQ and start sizzling some good quality sausages.

Aside from charring them on the grill and popping them into a bun with lashings of ketchup and mustard, sausages also make a great weekday meal with some beans or mash.

And it doesn't look like you need to pay that bit extra for that premium taste, as a blind taste test has revealed that one budget supermarket is just as good as the top rated brands.

To help find the best bangers for your buck, leading consumer website Which? tested a range of 12 branded and supermarket pork sausages and found that the cheapest was the best quality - Aldi.

The blind taste test had a panel of 69 consumers who compared a range of sizzling sausages from supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Tesco. Premium branded sausages from Heck and The Black Farmer were also included.

Tasting the sausages in randomised order, the tasters were asked to rate each sausage in terms of appearance, aroma, texture and taste and they found that Aldi tied with one premium brand for quality.

Aldi's Specially Selected 6 British Pork Sausages are just as good as a premium brand (Which?)

The budget supermarket has been wowing shoppers with their range of premium quality food at lower costs, and their pork sausages live up to their reputation.

Aldi's Specially Selected 6 British Pork Sausages tied for the top spot alongside 6 Premium Sausages from The Black Farmer, as they both scored a whopping 76%.

Both bangers managed to impress the panel and scored impressive marks across the board for taste and appearance.

What makes the results even better, is that Aldi's sausages cost just £1.99 for a 400g pack, making them that bit cheaper than The Black Farmer's £3.05 for 400g.

The Black Farmer's 6 Premium Sausages were also a top scorer (Which?)

Which? said of the results: Aldi's sausages show that great taste isn't a preserve of premium prices, as they were the cheapest sausages on test but still came joint-first overall.

These sausages scored a full five stars for both their strong and succulent pork flavour as well as the perfectly appetising colour."

On the opposite end of the scale, a few of the more expensive and top branded sausages came in at the bottom of the pile, proving that money doesn't mean good quality.

Morrisons The Best Thick Pork Sausages (£2.75, 400g) came in last with 57% and were 76p dearer than Aldi's winning bangers. Heck's 6 97% Pork Sausages £3 for 400g) were the second lowest with 59% from the panel.
