Aldi takes a swipe at Tesco price match after being named cheapest supermarket

Budget supermarket Aldi have taken a swipe at Tesco, making a joke about their price war.

Aldi has been named 'unbeatable' as it comes in as the cheapest supermarket for the several time running by The Grocer. It hasn't been knocked off the top spot since 2014.

As each supermarket tries to keep their customers from venturing off, Tesco have lowered their prices across items to match competitor's Aldi, with labels around the store highlighting the items that are as cheap as the one in the budget supermarket.

But Edinburgh Live did a price match of their own and Aldi still came in cheaper.

Taking to Facebook, Aldi-who are known not only for their budget friendly groceries but also quick witted social media team, shared a meme with a little jibe to Tesco's price match.

With the classic meme involving Taylor from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and the cat hissing, the caption above it reads: 'Tesco matching some of our prices' and then 'us with all the Aldi prices'.

No comment was attached, simply just an ellipsis.

And Aldi shoppers were quick to comment with over 7,000 likes and hundreds of comments.

And it looked like it divided shoppers with some sticking up for Tescos while other remained loyal to Aldi.

One said: "Tesco may price match but a lot of the price matched goods are not such good quality. I’ve stopped buying fresh fruit & veg from Tesco as it got to be so bad."

Another added: "I shout this each time I see a supermarket ad saying “Aldi Price matched”. ALDI HAVE THEM ALL"

"Tesco can do one at the moment, Aldi prices are way better, the only thing I wish Aldi had more of was gluten free products and a few more vegan bits. Other than that happy with my shop swap. I found shopping at Tesco we were spending £150 a week, at Aldi it’s about £35. Though because of the dietary requirements in our home I do have to go to Tesco for a couple of things." A third commented.

But others say they need to split their shop between the two rival.

"I shop at both stores, Aldi and Tesco. It's just that both of them have what I need and do not have each other. So I put an equals sign between them!" One shopper said.

Another was a fan of Tesco's rewards: "Tesco is only pence different & I can actually get my whole shop there. I also get points for flights/ferry. Works out cheaper for me to go to Tesco. Do like an occasional shop in Aldi though"

"I love aldi but there's not a lot of dairy free products so we usually have to split the weekly shop" A third added.
