Aldi steak beats M&S' in taste test - despite costing almost half the price

If you're planning on ditching the usual lamb this Easter and opting for a juicy steak instead (it might not be traditional, but it's certainly tasty), it may also be time to make another change to your food shopping.

As Aldi have beaten M&S on taste, quality, and price for their Sirloin Steak, in last night’s Supershoppers taste test on Channel 4.

Despite being 43% cheaper than the Marks and Spencer alternative, Aldi’s £19.78 per kg Specially Selected Scotch Aberdeen Angus Sirloin Steak won top spot in the Sirloin steak-off.

It's premium taste is perhaps due to the fact it's been matured for 36 days, giving it a more intense flavour, in comparison to M&S' 28 days.

Each of the supermarket steaks was taste tested by a group of people who sell steak for a living, proving you don't necessarily need to schlep all the way to M&S and spend a fortune for the best of the best.

Elsewhere in shops, Waitrose dry aged Aberdeen Angus Sirloin steaks cost £32.99 per kg, and Tesco's are £34 per kg.

But while Aldi came up trumps for its sirloin steak, M&S did win on rib-eye - although you'll still need to pay a pretty price for it.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Corporate Buying, says, “We are delighted with the results from the Supershoppers taste test. At Aldi, we know that money alone doesn’t buy you quality and for 43% cheaper, our British, Red Tractor assured steaks have long been a customer favourite.

The results do the talking, at Aldi, families can treat themselves to delicious, premium quality cuts of meat without spending a fortune.”
