Aldi slammed by 'raging' customers after launching square-shaped sausages

Earlier this week, budget supermarket Aldi proclaimed that they had come up with a way to make breakfast "a whole lot easier".

Their genius idea? Square-shaped sausages.

Yep, you read that right.

Dubbed 'Sausedges', the new product is a pork sausage that's shaped like a square.

But is it really new? According to the very angry people of Twitter - it's most certainly not.

Many were quick to point out that square-shaped sausages have been a delicacy for years in Scotland, where the dish is referred to as a Lorne sausage.

On Tuesday morning, Aldi tweeted: "Breakfast just became a whole lot easier... Will you be trying our Sausedge?"

Hundreds liked the post, but more than 1,000 people responded to it with criticism.

Some people have even accused the supermarket of "cultural appropriation" for passing off the design of the food as their own and ignoring its Scottish roots.

One person simply responded to the tweet saying that Aldi is "cancelled".

Another commented: "They're called Lorne sausages, ya absolute bawbags."

A third replied: "Scotland invented this years ago."

"The cheek o' yis," wrote an angry Scot. "Scotland can date our square, or Lorne sausages back to the 19th century. It is believed to have been named after Lorne (area name is no longer in use) but was located in the current Scottish region of Argyle & Bute."

A fifth person added: "Sorry Aldi, but I'm American and even I know the Scots have been doing this forever."

Others tweeted at the Scottish Police and Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, to highlight that the issue was as serious as a crime.

Comedian Janey Godley also waded into the debate, sharing a hilarious video of her "raging" at Aldi.

In the one minute clip, she says: "I'll tell you why I'm raging, I've just read online that Aldi have invented a square sausage patty.

"As if this is some new invention... listen up ya b*******, we've had square sausage in Scotland for at least 700 years since Robert the Bruce invented it, ok that bit's a lie, but go f*** yourself with 'we invented a square sausage'.

"That's cultural appropriation, I'm not having it. I'm raging."

Not everyone was furious about the 'Sausedge' though.

Some thought it simply sounded "yummy" and would be great alongside black pudding and eggs.

One man also pointed out that Iceland have been selling square sausages for "yonks" and no one has made a big deal of that.

Iceland jokingly responded to this telling Aldi to "keep up".

When contacted for comment regarding the backlash, Aldi told Mirror Online that the new product will only be "available for a limited time while stocks last" and they're sure that the Sausedges "will prove popular".
