Aldi signs deal for clean energy from Leicestershire supplier

Britain’s fifth biggest supermarket chain has signed a two year deal to source power from an East Midlands solar farm.

Nailstone Solar Farm, in west Leicestershire, will supply around 4,600 MWh of renewable energy a year to Aldi.

It is enough energy to supply the equivalent to almost 12 stores or cut more than 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

Aldi, which is based about 10 miles away in Atherstone, Warwickshire, operates 900 stores and has more than 36,000 employees.

A spokesman said: “The new partnership forms part of Aldi’s commitment to only purchase electricity generated by 100 per cent renewable sources – such as solar and wind – to power all its 920 UK stores and eleven distribution centres.

He said alongside working with renewable energy farms like Nailstone, the supermarket has also installed more than 100,000 solar panels at more than 400 of its stores.

Mary Dunn, managing director of corporate responsibility at Aldi UK, said: “We’re always looking for new opportunities to become more sustainable as a business, across both our stores and entire supply chain.

“That’s why we’re so excited to be working with Nailstone Solar Farm to boost our renewable energy network over the next few years.”

The spokesman said: “The supermarket has been Carbon Neutral since 2019 and has also pledged support to achieve net zero carbon from electricity use by 2030, from transport fuel, gas and refrigerants by 2035, and across its entire supply chain by 2040.”
