Aldi shoppers horrified over call to charge £1 for slower checkouts

Supermarket shoppers know that when it comes to checkout efficiency, Aldi is right up there at the top.

The grocer is known for its speedy till service, and while it delights many, it annoys some people.

One person has been left so frustrated by the speed of the service they're now calling for a £1 charge for slower lanes.

Posting on the Aldi UK Shoppers Facebook page, the shopper suggested: "Aldi customers, I understand many of you HATE the speed of the checkouts, question. Would you pay an extra £1 in your shopping for the luxury of being able to pack at your own pace at the checkout?

"Or do you believe you should be able to pack your shopping at the checkout regardless of the supermarket."

The post certainly caught the attention of shoppers, and hundreds of people have since commented.

While some think its a good idea, the majority aren't convinced, and insist the system is fine as it is.

Responding, one person said: "Can't believe people are moaning about this. It's no hardship putting your stuff back in the trolley and then packing - it saves everybody money them what a the problem. I'm more than happy to pack at the bench after."

"I always pack mine at the till .. bags already to go straight in .. never an issue," said somebody else.

A third wrote: "I’m more than happy to pack at benches."

"You're not meant to pack at the till in Aldi. Just fling it all in the trolley and pack at the bench," chimed in another shopper.

Somebody else said: "I just do it at my own pace. However, you should remember that you are not supposed to pack at the checkout...that's why they have the shelves at the windows. You're supposed to put everything back in the trolley then go to the shelves to pack your bags."

Speaking about the speed of its checkouts, an Aldi spokesperson said: "ALDI's checkouts operate with industry-leading efficiency.

"Our staff are encouraged to review and adjust their scan speed based on how quickly or slowly each customer packs their shopping. We ask that customers put their purchases back in their trolley or basket once they have been scanned, and then pack at their own pace at the long bench behind the tills.

"This not only reduces waiting times but also allows our team members to resume other responsibilities, such as filling shelves and helping customers."

If you want the checkout staff to slow down - just ask them! They'll be more than happy to oblige.
