Aldi shoppers hit out over 'infuriating' name of £2.19 vegan product

Shoppers at Aldi have been reacting in anger after the consumer giant named one of its new products.

The supermarket giant has launched a new vegan bacon product and people are predictably livid about it.

Aldi released an image of the new ‘bacon’ on Facebook, writing: "Who said vegan needed to be boring (and expensive)? Not us. In store now!"

The bacon is understood to be plant based and 10 rashers will cost you £2.19.

And their post on Facebook managed to attract the ire of meat eaters and veggies who became irate about the new product's name, the Manchester Evening News revealed.

One furious shopper wrote: "Call it something else. Bacon is a cut of MEAT. Simples."

A second added: "Impossible … bacon is meat….. rename it.”

A third critic blasted: "Getting p****ed off with this now. You don't want to eat meat so why the hell would you want to eat a product that resembles it?????"

Another exclaimed: "Bacon is bacon which is meat, this isn’t, so don’t call it bacon!"

And an online user called the name “infuriating.”

However, not everyone was infuriated by the vegan product.

One Aldi fan said: "I envy the people who’s biggest worry in life is what Aldi are calling their fake bacon.”

Another agreed: "For those complaining about it being called bacon because you want it described accurately. Maybe the meat version should be called " sliced pig back or side". You know, for the sake of accuracy and all that."

Whilst a third added: "I'm not a vegan or veggie at all, really love meat and dairy products, BUT I don't get why people get so annoyed by stuff like this. I think it's great having a wide range of food options for vegans and veggies. Sometimes I try them myself as well for a change.”

Aldi has been contacted for comment.
