Aldi shoppers have been pronouncing its name wrong for years

Budget supermarket Aldi has a legion of fans, with many priding themselves on being regular customers and knowing all the retailer's tips and tricks.

However, the latest revelation of how you actually pronounce the supermarket's name has left many shoppers shocked.

Some shoppers have been calling it “Al-di”, while others pronounce it “All-di”, but who’s in the wrong?

It turns out that the correct way of saying the supermarket is in “Al-di” with a harsh "a" at the start, reports KentLive.

The budget store began in Germany so the short sharp pronunciation is in line with the original.

Aldi first started as a small grocery store in Germany by Anna Albrecht - this is where its name comes from as it was named after its founder.

The "Al" is short for Albrecht and the "di" is short for discount.

The news follows claims that Aldi staff are "encouraged" to be as fast as possible at its checkouts.

Many customers have questioned this so the ExaminerLive has spoken to Aldi direct.

Aldi said that members are "encouraged" to be as efficient as possible, which in turn helps to keep the prices low.

But it added that it realises people may need to pack at different speeds, so checkout assistants are trained to match the shopper's pace.
