Aldi shopper held at knifepoint during serial robber's terrifying crime spree

A shopper was held hostage at knifepoint when a man tried to rob at an Aldi supermarket in Gloucester.

CCTV footage released by the Bristol Road branch shows Michael Lebon, 49, wielding a Stanley knife after he entered through the exit.

He holds a middle-aged woman hostage while demanding the staff to open the till as other shoppers watched in horror.

Another clip taken from a different angle shows at least one security guard talking in the walkie talkie and trying to alert the police.

Lebon grabs the cash from the closest cash point and flees the scene.

Later on the same day in July, he carried the same act in a Spar shop on Twyning’s High Street in Tewkesbury and the Applegreen service station on Cinderford High Street.

Lebon was arrested when the police searched a vehicle, reported Gloucestershire Live .

Lebon told police in an interview that he had carried out the robberies because his family had been evicted from their home.

The court was told that Lebon had been convicted 38 times for 123 offences.

In one incident he plunged 20ft from stairs and left with a broken arm and hip injuries as he raided a Sports Direct shop in Gloucester in 2017.

Michael Lebon was sentenced 12 years in prison (Gloucestershire Police)

Yesterday, he has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to his trail of offences which took place in July.

Shona Fletcher, investigating officer for the Aldi robbery said: "I am relieved for the victims and witnesses in this case particularly for the customer in the Aldi store held at knife point.

"This was a very frightening experience which will have a long term impact on all in the store on that morning.

"Lebon's sentencing will enable all affected to have some closure and the sentence given will hopefully highlight the seriousness in which offences of this nature are seen by the Crown Prosecution Service and will hopefully act as a deterrent to others."

The judge sentenced Lebon to eight years jail with an extended four year licence period, meaning that once he is released on parole he could be recalled to prison at any time during the next 12 years.
