Aldi scraps beloved Kevin the Carrot from Christmas ad and shoppers are gutted

Budget supermarket has fired Kevin the Carrot from their Christmas adverts and shoppers are fighting for justice.

Kevin the Carrot has been a beloved character of the festive advert from Aldi since 2016 with many customers collection plush toys of the carrot.

But shoppers got a shock when Aldi posted to Twitter informing them that Kevin the Carrot will not be making an appearance this year.

Over social media, they teased that bananas were better before introducing their new character.

Ebanana Scrooge has made its debut in the 2021 Christmas ad.

The Mirror reports, a 20-second teaser clip shows a little Ebanana patiently waiting for Father Christmas, snuggled up next to a mince pie in front of a roaring log fire on Christmas Eve.

A mystery hand then appears but chooses to take the mince pie instead of Ebanana, leaving him visibly upset.

Ebanana then screams out: "Santa, wait…why didn’t he take me?"

As the teaser clip finishes, Ebanana angrily shouts "I hate Christmas", leaving viewers unsure on what is going to happen next.

The full ad will be revealed across national TV and online on Thursday, November 11.

Fans seem to be unhappy that Kevin the Carrot, who has become so popular in the last five years that plush toy versions of him and his family sell out every year, is missing from this year's Christmas advert.

Aldi did give a clue to why Kevin is absent on Twitter, claiming that they hadn't seen him since Christmas 2020. The German supermarket chain joked that it could be because he's in the same situation as M&S' Colin the Caterpillar Cake.

One person took to Twitter to say: "Who is suing Kevin the carrot. Shameless #justiceforkevin."

Another added: "Noooooooo! Christmas won't be Christmas without Kevin the carrot," while a third wrote: "Kevin is a superior carrot, the King of carrots one could say."

The store tweeted: "Sorry everyone. Due to ongoing proceedings, #KevinTheCarrot might have to miss Christmas this year. #Justice4Kevin."

Since the launch of the new character, Aldi's social media team has put in all the stops to raise awareness of the unlikely Christmas mascot.

As well as changing their banners on Twitter and Facebook to a bright yellow, they've also changed their Twitter name to 'Ebanana x Aldi Stores' with a picture of an angry looking banana.
