Aldi makes big change to some of its checkouts but shoppers have been left confused

Aldi has made a big change to a number of its checkouts but some shoppers who tried the new system were left unimpressed.

The new method, which is being trialled at 77 stores in the North East, is aiming to reduce plastic waste.

The budget retailer has introduced scales at checkouts so people can buy loose fruit and vegetables by weight rather than number of items, and has launched reusable bags for the fresh products rather than plastic bags, reports MyLondon.

The price per kilo has been carefully calculated to ensure Aldi's claim it has the lowest everyday prices on the market is correct.

Since the new system was introduced, many shoppers have taken to social media to share their views. One user said: "All them nice dirty hands picking it about" while another added: "Good luck to them on this one... it won't last long".

Another said it made their skin crawl to think of their vegetables being put on a dirty conveyor belt.

And a third added: "Plastic reduction is good but we must not forget the job plastic does in reducing food waste, equally as important."

An Aldi spokesperson said rather than placing directly onto a conveyor belt, customers will first put any loose fruit and veg into a reusable bag, like many other supermarkets.

The spokesperson added that customers who still want to opt for the pre-packed produce will be able to do so, as these will still be sold.
