Aldi's 'genius' lettuce comment as store takes swipe at Liz Truss

Aldi gave its social media followers a laugh after it acted quickly following the resignation of Liz Truss. The PM's stint in office was became the shortest in history as she announced she was quitting from outside Number 10 on Thursday.

She told journalists gathered in Downing Street that she "cannot deliver the mandate" which Conservative members gave her just over six weeks earlier. Instead she said she would step down, but would remain in post until her successor was chosen," reports the Liverpool Echo.

However as calls for Ms Truss to resign mounted during the past week, the Daily Star asked readers 'if Liz Truss can outlast a lettuce?'. And it set up a live feed of a lettuce next to the outgoing prime minister to see which would last the longest.

Attracting thousands of viewers, the live stream was flooded with comments, particularly after Ms Truss' statement. Not missing a trick, Aldi turned to twitter writing: "What a great day to be a lettuce."

Responding to the supermarket's comment, one user Dotty, said: "Genius." Robbie added: "When Aldi goes in full force...boom."

Steve Cooper joked: "Kos it’s been a Little Gem of a day…" And Natalie said: "#LettuceHaveAGeneralElection."

And the same post on the store's Facebook page also sparked thousands of likes and comments. And it found the funny side for many followers.

Claire Sanders pleaded: "Oh please please please Aldi put Liz the lettuce in the Kevin advert this year."

Debbie Clark added her own joke writing: "Liz to her husband “Lettuce Leaf Downing Street today!” while Howard Alexander said: "I think Cuthbert the caterpillar should be our next PM."

Clive R Flack added: "Lettuce pray we get a leader who can sort this mess out, how busy is Kevin, Aldi Uk?" While Jonathan Hermans went puntastic with his response. He wrote: "Lettuce not argue about politics. This is just the tip of the iceberg of things to come.

"I wonder who the next GEM will be. Maybe a good time to turn over a new leaf !!"
