Aldi's Cowgate store puts door staff in place to control shoppers

Mask-wearing security guards were put in place at a Newcastle supermarket in a bid to help control the number of shoppers.

One guard was photographed outside Aldi's Cowgate branch, where severe limits on the number of customers are being allowed in at a time.

The move comes as it emerged Aldi staff will pocket a bumper bonus for their hard work during the Coronavirus crisis.

Employees will receive a 10% bonus for "working tirelessly" during the pandemic.

An Aldi spokesperson told ChronicleLive that customer numbers are at the "manager's discretion" for each store.

The measure is one of several implemented by Aldi to aid social distancing, and to try and keep staff and shoppers safe.

Checkout staff will be protected with clear screens, while two-metre markers are being put on the floors of stores to encourage "responsible social distancing".

Customers are also being urged to use contactless payment such as credit cards, Apple Pay and Android Pay where possible.

The bonus will be backdated to March 9, around the time Covid-19 started to cause chaos at supermarkets across Britain.

Shelves were emptied as panic buyers stockpiled essentials.
