Aldi's Christmas advert takes 'savage' swipe at M&S and leaves fans in stitches

The Christmas season is upon us, which also means it's the battle of adverts - and one retailer has been declared 'the winner' after taking a hilarious swipe at a competitor.

Aldi's Christmas advert, "A Christmas Carrot", premiered yesterday evening and fans spotted a 'savage' swipe at M&S following its controversial cake row.

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Cuthbert the Caterpillar, famed for his high-profile battle with of Mark and Spencer's Colin the Caterpillar, go up against each other.

But if you don't look closely, you could quite easily miss it.

The budget supermarket's festive advert is a heart-warming take on the Dickensian classic and features the family favourite Kevin the Carrot, who must help Ebanana Scrooge remember the joys of the Christmas season.

There was a lot for viewers to enjoy in the new festive ad, which also features England Striker Marcus Rashford as the voice of a radish, and while Kevin is certainly the star of this year's advert, eagle eyed viewers spotted one moment that has left them in stitches as they believe it to be a swipe at M&S.

In a blink and you'll miss it moment, Aldi reignited the 'Cuthbert V Colin drama' at the beginning of the ad, as Cuthbert makes a memorable cameo where he is seen being arrested by two lemon police officers.

Poor Cuthbert, he can't seem to catch a break, can he?

The moment is a tongue-in-cheek take on the very infamous battle that took place earlier this year, after M&S argued that the budget supermarket's version of their caterpillar cake had infringed on its trademark.

Twitter viewers were quick to spot the cameo and they have enjoyed Aldi poking fun at the legal drama which occurred earlier this year. (Twitter)

For a while, the two were locked in a hilarious battle with Aldi's social media team poking fun at the whole legal drama and eventually had the backing of the British nation who called for Cuthbert to 'be released.'

One fan spotted the moment in the advert and highlighted it for other viewers in a tweet captioned, "Cuthbert the Caterpillar getting arrested in the Aldi Christmas advert is super patter."

Another viewer tweeted: " Dead at Aldi putting Cuthbert the Caterpillar getting arrested in their Christmas ad."

One person added: "Check out Cuthbert getting arrested in the background! I aspire to be as savage a marketer as Aldi."

"Cuthbert the Caterpillar getting arrested at the beginning. Well played Aldi, well played." another impressed viewer wrote.

Aldi's "A Christmas Carrot" premiered yesterday evening on ITV during the break for for Emmerdale.
