Aldi’s 99p hot cross buns are voted the best in Good Housekeeping taste test

Aside from chocolate, one thing we can’t get enough of at Easter are hot cross buns - and Aldi’s have come out on top at this year’s Good Housekeeping’s Easter Taste Test. The discounted supermarket has won the prestigious title of the Best Hot Cross Bun for its Specially Selected Luxury Fruited Hot Cross Bun (99p for a pack of four), scoring an impressive 88/100.

The supermarket beat Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Iceland to the all-important top spot, reiterating that purse-friendly products do not need to compromise on quality.

If you fancy getting your hands on a pack (or two) yourself, we’ve popped the store locator for Aldi, here. You’ll also find the most up to date information on opening and closing times listed there as well.

The Specially Selected Luxury Fruited Hot Cross Buns are part of Aldi’s vast range of more than ten different varieties of the Easter favourite. Flavours range from sweet and sumptuous Salted Caramel and Belgian Chocolate (99p for a pack of four) to the new taste-bud tingling Chilli and Cheese (£1.09 for a pack of four) flavour, and for those with a real sweet tooth, Aldi’s new Honeycomb (£1.09 for a pack of four) bun is a heavenly choice. These land in stores from Thursday 25th February.

The winning Hot Cross Buns retail at just 99p, making them 66p cheaper than Marks and Spencer’s version and 20% cheaper than Sainsbury’s.

We’re not sure we can wait until Easter to spread some butter on a toasted hot cross bun…

Stacey Smith, Food and Drink Editor at the Good Housekeeping Institute praised the deliciously sweet treat for its “toffee-like sultanas”, and “subtle notes of cinnamon and clove”. Sarah comments: “Aldi’s Hot Cross Buns are clearly a great pick for those on a budget (but not willing to compromise on taste!).”

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of buying at Aldi UK, comments: “It is fantastic to see our Hot Cross Buns recognised for their taste, quality and value for money. It’s testament to the care and commitment that goes into bringing fabulous products to our shoppers at great value.”

As for other Easter treats, Baileys has launched gold-finished chocolate mini eggs in time for Easter. The luxurious new treats are an egg-cellent choice for Baileys lovers this Easter.

Marks and Spencer’s Easter 2021 food range includes a giant chocolate Percy Pig and cheese hot cross buns. The high street retailer has unveiled its mouth-watering Easter food range - and it's sure to be a hit with sweet-toothed shoppers.

Tesco selling 28 exclusive Easter eggs including Cadbury Orange Buttons Giant Egg. With prices starting at just 50p, Tesco is stocking over 200 chocolate Easter eggs this year. Shoppers can get hold of 28 exclusive ones including the Twix White Chocolate Easter Egg and Cadbury Orange Buttons Giant Egg.
