Aldi reveals six big changes to store policy amid coronavirus lockdown

Aldi has unveiled a number of changes made to store rules amid the coroavirus lockdown.

The supermarket giant will implement six new policies in it's stores from this weekend onwards after writing to customers outlining their position.

These include:

  • Providing gloves to all store and distribution workers
  • Installing clear screens at more than 7,000 checkouts
  • Limiting the number of people in store at any one time
  • Encouraging customers to shop alone, where possible, and adhere to one person per trolley
  • Installing two-metre floor markers and increased in-store signage promoting physical distancing
  • Encouraging customers to use contactless payment such as contactless cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay rather than cash, where possible

Boss Giles Hurley said: "Working together, we have continued to make changes to protect you and our colleagues, and to ensure we can feed the nation, including the most vulnerable, at this unprecedented time.

"Most recently, we have begun providing our store and distribution colleagues with the option of wearing face masks, and of accessing the Government’s Covid-19 testing programme."

"These moves were in addition to the other measures we have put in place to provide you with a safe, efficient and affordable shopping experience when you visit your local Aldi store."

"These measures would not have been as effective without you playing your part by following our guidelines with patience and understanding.

"There are bound to be more changes to come in these and other areas of our everyday lives.

"Whatever they may be, the steps we have taken are important and we expect that they – and your continued support for them – will be needed for the foreseeable future.

"Another issue that is not going away is the need for us all to make our money go further."

He added: "Whatever changes we make in store – and I will of course keep you updated whenever we do – I want you to know that whenever you shop at Aldi, you can be certain that the price you pay at the till will be the lowest of any supermarket.

Aldi had previously implemented a raft of social distancing measures, including a no touch policy, floor markings, checkout safety screens and a one-adult-per-shop policy.

They listed busiest and quietest times to visit its stores and used a website traffic light system in a bid to ease overcrowding.

NHS, police and fire service workers with valid ID now get priority access in queues at all times.

Most stores are also open until 10pm, and Aldi bosses have been encouraging people to visit at quieter times.

Busiest times are said to be late morning with the quieter periods between 7pm and 10pm.
