Aldi reveals it's trialling new self-service checkouts at stores in the UK

German discounter Aldi has revealed it's finally trialling out new self-service tills as part of efforts to save money and ease the checkout experience for customers.

The new initiative will allow shoppers to pack items at their leisure - providing relief to many customers who currently find its speedy process stressful.

New checkouts are being piloted at the discount retailer’s Glascote store in Staffordshire - it follows on from the UK's introduction of the first robot-checkout at a Tesco store in Northampton a decade ago.

Lidl, meanwhile, first introduced the machines in stores in 2014 - it's since been implemented in 150 of its 740 UK stores.

Aldi bosses said a trial of the new system of automated tills will be evaluated before a final decision on a wider roll-out will be made.

Aldi UK communications director Richard Thornton said: "As well as providing outstanding quality products at unbeatable prices, we are focused on giving our customers a quick and simple experience in our stores."

"We think these new checkouts will help further improve that experience and we are looking forward to seeing how customers respond to this extra option at our Glascote store."

The news comes after the country’s first ever Aldi Local opened in Balham, London, last month. It also follows an industry investigation into a merger between Asda and Sainsbury's which regulators have warned will lead to store closures and inflated prices for millions of shoppers .
