Aldi responds after submitting plans to sell alcohol until midnight at new North Shields store

Aldi has no plans currently to open a new store until midnight - despite seeking permission to sell alcohol until then.

The firm's first North Shields store is expected to open this summer.

Construction is now well under way on the Hawkeys Lane store, which is expected to create around 40 new jobs.

Plans were submitted to North Tyneside Council this week for a licence to sell alcohol from 6am until midnight, on each day of the week.

Other Aldi stores typically close at 10pm, and an Aldi spokesperson said there are no plans to keep the new shop open any later "at this time".

"Construction for our new North Shields store is progressing well as we move towards opening in Summer this year," added the spokesperson.

"Opening times will be in line with our other stores in the area and we have no plans to change those at this time.”

No official opening date has been confirmed for the new shop, which locals previously branded a "godsend".

It is part of the budget supermarket’s long-term target to reach 1,200 stores in the UK by 2025.

On average, Aldi is expected to open more than one store a week during 2021 as it rapidly expands across Britain.
