Aldi removes plastic straws from all own-brand drinks cartons

Aldi will no longer sell its own-brand juice cartons with plastic straws.

The retailer says it will be swapping them out for paper straws in a bid to cut down on its single-use plastic waste.

It estimates the move will eliminate 70 million plastic straws from circulation every year.

This equates to more than 100 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic, Aldi says.

The news comes as an identical scheme was announced by Sainsbury's yesterday.

Aldi says the new straws will be fully-recyclable and made from FSC-certified cardboard.

It is just one of a number of measures introduced by the supermarket chain to have all its product packaging "reusable, recyclable or compostable" by the end of 2025.

Other recent initiatives include switching out the plastic shrink-wrap on its multipack soft drinks for cardboard and removing plastic packaging from its egg range.

Plastics and packaging director at Aldi UK, Richard Gorman, said: “Removing plastic straws from own-brand drinks cartons is another step in our journey to reducing plastic packaging across our products.

“Our customers want environmentally-friendly products, and plastic straws are one thing, in particular, that people want to move away from to help make a difference."
