Shoppers have praised Aldi for its latest proposal to Marks & Spencer in the Colin v Cutherbert the Caterpillar cake saga.
Aldi posted a message on its Facebook page asking M&S if they would consider teaming up and 'take a stand' against cancer.
The supermarket suggested that the two retailers could come together and raise money for the respective cancer charities, which both stores support.
The message read: "Hey Marks and Spencer, we’re taking a stand against caterpillar cruelty. Can Colin and Cuthbert be besties?
"We're bringing back a limited edition Cuthbert next month and want to donate all profits to cancer charities including your partners Macmillan Cancer Support and ours Teenage Cancer Trust. Let's raise money for charity, not lawyers #caterpillarsforcancer."
Last week, M&S started legal action against Aldi's Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake, arguing that the product infringes its trademark and lodged an intellectual property claim with the High Court.
The retailer said the similarity of Aldi's product leads customers to believe it is of the same standard and "ride on the coat-tails" of M&S's reputation with the product.
M&S wants Aldi to remove the product from sale and agree not to sell anything similar in the future.
Aldi responded, tweeting: "This is not just any court case, this is... #FreeCuthbert."
Over the weekend Aldi has also made several 'cheeky' posts on its Facebook page including: "Cuthbert has been found GUILTY...of being delicious. #FreeCuthbert."
They quickly followed the open letter to M&S with a plea to the other big supermarkets to come together too.
Aldi's latest Facebook post read: "Morning Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose & Partners, Co-op. Cuthbert needs the help of Curly, Clyde, Cecil, Charlie, Morris and Wiggles. Caterpillars clubbing together to raise money for charity, not lawyers. #caterpillarsforcancer. Up for it?"
Aldi shoppers have been praising the idea, with some describing it as a 'wonderful gesture'.
Gemma commented: "Brilliant, whoever came up with this idea is a PR genius."
Zena wrote: "Aldi, this is impressive! Something good coming out of the Court case of the century. Well done."
Jo said: "Awww Aldi, you're won the internet today!! What a fab idea, unite the caterpillars and raise money for a good cause."
