Aldi praised for bringing Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake back for charity fundraiser

The controversial caterpillar facing a legal row with Marks & Spencer is to return to Aldi tomorrow.

Aldi is to begin selling a limited-edition Cuthbert caterpillar to help raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Marks & Spencer started legal action against the supermarket over its likeness to their famous sponge, Colin.

But a limited-edition Cuthbert is set to return to the shelves on May 17, priced at £4.99, with all profits being donated to charity.

On Monday, the cake took part in a skydive to raise more funds, with members of the public invited to donate here.

Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi, said: "Cuthbert has been the centre of global media attention.

M&S has started legal action against Aldi in an effort to protect its Colin the Caterpillar cake (PA)

He added: "We felt a dramatic return was called for to celebrate him coming back to our stores. And it doesn't get more dramatic than jumping from the sky at 50mph.

"Our loyal shoppers have really backed Cuthbert during these last few weeks and we can't wait to bring a limited edition version of him back to reunite him with his fans and thank everyone for their support, while also raising money for charity, including our partner Teenage Cancer Trust."

The caterpillar's return has been welcomed on social media.

One joked: "Nobody's birthday in May but I'm buying one just because I've loved Aldi's positive attitude to this and their hilarious responses."

Another added: "I do believe this will be a sell-out! Make sure you've got plenty of stock.

"Well done on this ingenious idea and a big round of applause for all the funds you will raise for charity. I love Aldi. You guys are winners turning situations around making a negative a huge positive."

One mum asked: "Will I get arrested by the M&S fun police if I buy one?

"My son is desperate for a caterpillar cake for his birthday in June, and out of principle I'm refusing to buy it from M&S."

"I don’t really want one BUT will be supporting Cuthbert all the way and buying 2!!!", a fourth admitted.
