Aldi officially named cheapest supermarket for a basket of everyday goods

German discounter Aldi has been crowned best of the rest in a weekly supermarket poll based on value for money.

The big four rival was found to be almost £5 less than Asda when it came to the average cost of a basket of goods.

That's according to The Grocer's weekly price comparison - which looks at the cost of 33 staple items in Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose stores.

However, for the past seven days, it also included Aldi as a guest retailer for the first time.

The survey found that Aldi's total of £36.73 was £4.47 cheaper than runner-up Asda despite the latter's basket being £1.29 cheaper than this time last year.

The Grocer said that Aldi, whose basket was 22p cheaper than a year ago, offered the lowest price for 30 of the 33 items, with 28 exclusively cheapest.

"Guest retailer Aldi claimed a convincing pricing win in the final week of the Grocer 33 year, its fourth win from four appearances over the past 12 months," the magazine said.

The report showed that Asda was the only supermarket to get remotely close to Aldi on price.

In third place, Morrisons was £8.71 more expensive at £45.44 followed by Tesco on £47.19 and Sainsbury's on £47.71.

Upmarket Waitrose was a hefty £18.22 more expensive than Aldi on £54.95.

Julie Ashfield, at Aldi said: "This result shows that yet again we are Britain’s lowest-priced supermarket, which is a key reason why more than a million new shoppers have switched to Aldi from more expensive supermarkets during the last 12 months.

"We’re continuing to work hard to keep prices low for our customers, as well as expanding our store network to reach even more shoppers."

Aldi is the UK’s fifth largest supermarket with 825 stores.

The grocer, which hires more than 34,000 employees, has plans to have a total UK store count of 1,200 by 2025.
