Aldi names four stores getting self checkouts as customers plan to boycott new tills

Aldi has officially named the next four stores to get self-checkouts installed after a successful trial.

The new-style tills will be coming to Woodgate in Leicester, Manchester Arndale, Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire and Bedford, the Liverpool Echo reports.

But not all customers are impressed - with many saying they won't use the service if it's installed in their local branch.

Writing on the Echo's What's On page, one shopper wrote: "I wouldn't use them. Pay for staff checkouts a lot of us like a bit of chat with a real person not a machine."

Another added: "Self service is taking away people's income and will be slower using a machine. No machine can go as fast as a Aldi till operator person."

A third said: "Well I won't be using them."

The new-style tills were first trialled in April 2019 at Aldi's Glascote store in Staffordshire.

At the time, Aldi UK communications director Richard Thornton said: "As well as providing outstanding quality products at unbeatable prices, we are focused on giving our customers a quick and simple experience in our stores."

"We think these new checkouts will help further improve that experience and we are looking forward to seeing how customers respond to this extra option at our Glascote store."

The shop has now said that this trial was a success.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Following positive feedback, we’ve extended our trial of self-service checkouts to four more locations to further improve the customer experience.”

As such it's planning four more locations - ahead of making a decision on whether all stores will get them.

And while some people are unimpressed, others have welcomed the move.

One user said: "At last, hate having to queue when you only have a few bits."

Another added: "I think it's a great idea and a way for a bargain superstores to keep the prices even lowersix tills one staff member the rest will be busy loading the shelves as they can never keep up.

"I like hands off service to be honest."
