Aldi named the cheapest major UK supermarket for August 2020 by Which?

Which? has revealed the cheapest supermarket in the UK based on a big shop made in August 2020.

Which? looked at the prices of 74 everyday branded and supermarket own-label products, including groceries and household essentials.

And it's Aldi which came out on top, at just £66.45 for the shop - £15.66 less than Tesco. Aldi's big rival, Lidl, was only slightly more expensive than its fellow German-founded retailer, with the trolley-full costing £67.17. Perhaps predictably, Waitrose was the most expensive, at £105.25.

At Asda, the shop cost £74.12, compared to £82.11 at Tesco, £84.73 at Morrisons, £87.45 at Sainsbury's and £100.16 from online retailer, Ocado.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: "We know that this is a difficult time for many and so we are incredibly proud to have maintained our position as the UK's cheapest supermarket. We remain wholly committed to continuing to provide our customers with the best value products of any supermarket."

Which? monitored the prices of items including free-range eggs, Hovis wholemeal bread and Knorr stock pots to work out which of the major retailers offered the best value in August.
