Aldi named cheapest UK supermarket beating Lidl

Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK.

Those doing their weekly shop at the store in July could have picked up some of the best bargains, a new report says.

Aldi has taken the crown as the cheapest place to shop in the latest price comparison from Which?, who looked at the cost for a trolley of 85 items, including groceries and household essentials, across eight supermarket chains to find the best value.

The consumer group found Aldi to be 96p less than Lidl in July, stealing the crown from the store which had been hailed the most budget-friendly in June, reports The Express.

On average, Aldi customers paid £78.50 for the full shopping list, which included own-brand goods and branded products.

Lidl wasn't very far behind with a weekly shop there costing just £79.46.

Asda was next at £88.29, followed by Tesco at £98.48 and Morrisons at £99.30.

Sainsbury’s was the most expensive of the four main chains, with the same shop costing £103.26.

Ocado and Waitrose were at the other end of the scale, with a trolley costing on average £117.85 through the online shopping service and £122.47 at Waitrose.
