Aldi launch first self-service checkouts - meaning no more struggling to keep up with the cashier

Aldi is set to trial self-service checkouts.

And the news could bring joy to millions of shoppers , who may soon be able to pack at their own pace.

It is is fair to say the budget supermarket chain has a reputation for super-speedy scanning.

Customers often face the fight of their lives simply trying to keep up with the cashier.

But, according to Birmingham Live , there could be hope on the horizon.

Retail Gazette reports the firm is trying out the tills in Tamworth. If they are a hit, they could possibly be rolled out across Britain.

Bosses at the German discount grocer said the trial run of the new system would be evaluated before a decision on further rollouts is made.

Aldi UK communications director Richard Thornton said: "As well as providing outstanding quality products at unbeatable prices, we are focused on giving our customers a quick and simple experience in our stores.

"We think these new checkouts will help further improve that experience and we are looking forward to seeing how customers respond to this extra option."

Many of the other supermarket giants, including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, already use self-serve checkouts.

Aldi’s main budget competitor Lidl has them in 150 of its 740 UK stores.

The firm is also considering smaller inner-city stores like the Tesco Express and Sainsbury's Local outlets.
