Aldi is now selling two-packs of machine washable face masks for £4.99

Aldi has become the first major UK supermarket to sell face coverings as the country prepares to enter the next phase of lockdown.

At just £4.99 for a pack of two, the elasticated cotton masks have proved an instant hit with shoppers.

They went on sale in stores in the first weekend of June and have already sold out online.

But the masks can still be bought in Aldi’s middle aisle and online in its “Specialbuy” section once the German retailer replenishes its stocks.

The basic white coverings come in one size that’s large enough to cover the mouth and nose.

However, Aldi has warned that they are non-medical and are not “intended for use in healthcare settings”.

“This is a general use face covering” the supermarket chain states on its website, adding: “It’s not a medical device or personal protective equipment.”

Instead, it says, the masks are designed for anyone “looking for that extra peace of mind during unprecedented times.”

It comes as the Government prepares to re-open non-essential shops and make face coverings mandatory on public transport from June 15.
